It is always better to clip only a small amount off the ends of toenails to prevent bleeding. If your bird's nails are long or overgrown, it is better to clip small amounts every couple of weeks over a period of time, until the nails are at the normal length, rather than to clip severely resulting in blood loss. You should never clip your bird's nails without having some type of styptic powder, or other blood clotting agent on hand before beginning.
