We get a lot of calls and emails from customers who are not sure of the weight of their bird when trying to figure out what size bird harness or flight suit they need. Knowing the weight of your bird not only is the best way to purchase the right size harness for your bird, it also lets you know how your bird is doing weight wise. Birds, just like their humans can sometimes be a little overweight and may need to trim down a little to stay healthy. Also weight loss in a bird for no apparent reason, even a few grams, should be monitored as it could be an early indication of a health issue that might need to be addressed by your avian vet. Weighing your bird every few months is a great way to monitor your bird's health for early signs of a problem that might be very easily corrected. Harnesses and flight suit sizes are recommended by manufacturers based on bird weights to get the best fit and the safest fit for your bird. If you do not know the weight of your bird, you can give your local vet's office a call and ask if they will let you get a weight on your bird. Many clinics will let you bring your bird in for a quick weight at no charge. If you haven't had your bird vet checked in a while, it might be a good time for that well checkup and a chance to get a weight on your bird for your vet's records as well. You can also see if you have a local bird club, and if so ask if someone in the club has a scale and will weigh your bird for you. Also, local bird breeders usually have at least one scale for weighing babies and can usually help you get a weight on your bird. |
